Time could cure all things, but it had been two long years since Molly passed, and I still missed her every day. Only a few short hours after I slept with Logan, I couldn’t begin to move on from the guilt and regret that washed over me the second I woke up.
It wasn’t just what I had done, either. The fact that Logan felt like he had to apologize to me for going into heat made my chest ache. How could it possibly be his fault that he went into heat? And why should it be his problem if I couldn’t control myself around an omega in heat, anyway?
If anything, this should have been a time when I could control myself. For one thing, Logan was technically my employee. For another, more obvious one, he was a man — and beyond a little passive curiosity, I’d never wanted to sleep with a man before. Right up until the moment I was rocking up against Logan against my front door last night, I hadn’t expected to sleep with a man, either.
I had fallen asleep late and woken up early. That meant I’d already spent a few long hours lying awake with Logan in my arms, and I still had no excuse.
I couldn’t blame it on alcohol. I’d driven Logan and myself to and from the bar, without even a single mouthful of beer in me before I got behind the wheel. The only thing I’d had messing with my judgment was Logan going into heat, and even that hadn’t happened until I’d already slipped up once.
All the temporary confidence I’d felt when Carol told me to “think about it” had disappeared. What I had done was a terrible betrayal. The fact that I had knotted Logan, proving that he was my new fated mate, took nothing away from the heartache of losing my first one.
My thoughts were a jumbled mess. At the same time, I couldn’t loosen my arms around the omega nestled in them. He was warm, his breathing even and calm; when he turned, I caught sight of a sleepy smile on his face, and the sight of him without those trademark big glasses put a mirror smile on my face, too.
What Carol had said was true. He did make me happy. He was incredible with Mason, and that was the most important factor in my life — but he was perfect in so many other ways, too.
He was sweet and patient, hardworking, eloquent and clever. He shared our pack principles of fairness, equality and loyalty. Clearly, he had taken quite well to my packmates and their omegas last night.
I sighed, closing my eyes as my head tipped back against the pillow. I didn’t know what to do. Obviously, there was no hiding from the truth now that I’d knotted him, but maybe I’d been too quick to intervene in Logan’s conversation with Nyle.
I didn’t think Logan would ever hurt me, purposely or otherwise. He was too warm-hearted and pure for that.
